Worth seeing places - Cortina

Cortina d'Ampezzo

The museum in Cortina

The Ciasa de ra Regoles, in Corso Italia, had been the administrative office of the "Regole d'Ampezzo", a Longobard institution, still alive in nowadays Cortina. It is an association of families (about 800), descending from the old Ampezzo stock, who run the woods and pastures of the valley. Nowadays this building is the seat of the renowned "Musei delle Regole", divided into three sections.

Worth seeing places in Cortina:

The church of St. Filippo & Giacomo was built in 1775 with the direction of architect Promperg. Several artists have contributed to the building. There are sculptures by Andrea Brustolon, paintings by Francesco A. Zeiler, Giuseppe Zanchi, Luigi Gillarduzzi and Giuseppe Ghedina. Between 1851 and 1858 the tower bell was built. This is today one of the symbols of Cortina. As the serious risk of a barbaric invasion was avoided, tradition says that the building of the church " Santuario della Difesa " was commissioned in 1480, as thanking to the Madonna. The church was later rebuilt in 1743. There are some nice sculptures in the rococo style, and frescoes by Zeiler.

The Modern Art Museum "Mario Rimoldi" exhibits one of the largest private collections of figurative arts of the Italian twentieth century school, with over 300 works of art by the major painters of the early 1900s: Campigli, De Chirico, De Pisis, Sironi, Guttuso, Morandi, Music, Savinio, Tomea, and many others.
The gallery exhibits the works of the collection by turns, together with paintings from other Museums and international art collections. The Museum plays a prominent role in the contemporary artistic panorama, for the quality of the works collected.

The Ethnographic Museum of the Ampezzo Valley collects the objects of our past, from rural life to domestic life, from the religious beliefs to the artistic expressions of the Ampezzo Valley. A small summary of the rustic and pastoral world of our valley in the past centuries, combined with feelings of refined artistic precision and objects from earlier periods, enhanced by the traditional costumes which are still shown off today on the most important occasions.

The Palaeontologic Museum "Rinaldo Zardini" hosts the most important Italian private collection of fossils dating from the Cassian period, i.e. from the geologic era ranging between 230 and 220 million years ago. In addition, the Museum recounts the extraordinary adventure of the life in the tropical seas, the Dolomites were born from, through the fossil evidence found in the rocks of our mountains. Two hundred million years are narrated by the traces which the land has given us and the scientific research is today able to interpret.
